AI and Machine Learning in Architectural Engineering and Design Management

The International Journal of Architectural Engineering and Design Management (AEDM) is pleased to announce a special issue dedicated to the ground breaking integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) within Architectural Engineering and Design Management. This pioneering Special Issue explores the transformative capabilities that AI and ML technologies have to redefine the paradigms of architectural engineering and design and change the way architectural engineering and design processes are conceived, developed, and managed. Therefore, we are interested in research articles that evidence the impact of AI and ML applications leading to enhanced design processes and architectural engineering outcomes. We are also particularly interested in research exploring the application of AI and ML towards sustainable architectural engineering solutions, particularly in reducing carbon footprints (embedded and operational), optimizing energy efficiency and fostering circular economy principles. This special issue will showcase cutting-edge research and applications in this exciting area.

We invite submissions on a wide range of topics related to AI and Machine Learning applications in Architectural Engineering and Design Management, including but not limited to:

  • AI-driven design optimization
  • Generative design using neural networks
  • AI-based building performance analysis
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) and AI
  • Predictive maintenance using AI and ML
  • AI-enhanced sustainability assessment
  • Human-computer collaboration in design
  • Natural language processing in design documentation
  • AI-driven decision support systems for design and construction
  • Ethics and responsible AI in architectural engineering and design
  • AI-driven structural design solutions
  • AI-driven MEP design solutions

Submission Instructions

We are looking for original research papers where AI and ML have been applied and the results assessed compared to traditional architectural engineering and design management processes. Authors must clarify the novel contribution to scientific knowledge (and practice) by explaining how the research advances our understanding of AI and ML within architectural engineering and design management processes. We encourage authors to discuss whether the AI and ML solutions are sustainable (as some algorithms are energy intensive). We welcome extensive literature reviews provided they represent the state-of-the-art in the chosen area, the need for a review is thoroughly justified, and the analysis of the data from the literature followed a rigorous scientific process. Case studies are also welcome if justified with a basis on the under-researched exploratory nature of the research. Finally, industry professionals are welcome to contribute to short research papers that provide valuable insights from a practical, innovation and industry-focused perspective. The format of these papers, while generally aligning with academic standards, could differ slightly to accommodate the industry-specific nature of the research. We ask authors to address concerns related to bias (papers that unintentionally promote specific products or companies) and research rigor (precision and thoroughness applied in conducting research). Manuscripts must be prepared following the journal's submission guidelines, found on the journal's website.
