AI in Addiction Medicine: Bridging Innovation and Clinical Practice

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, yet its application in addiction medicine remains underdeveloped. Emerging technologies can address critical gaps by integrating clinical expertise with data analytics to improve diagnosis, treatment, and proactive care. This call for papers invites interdisciplinary contributions to explore AI’s role in transforming addiction care while addressing ethical, practical, and systemic challenges.

Key Themes and Research Priorities

  • Clinical Tools: Chatbots providing 24/7 support though AI dialogue and AI role-play scenarios for real-world challenge simulation; decision-support systems identifying potential drug interactions, optimizing dosages, and synthesizing EHRs, lab data, social determinants, and cultural factors into personalized care plans. Tailoring interventions for patients with co-occurring disorders (e.g., depression, PTSD). Utilization of AI in contingency management.
  • Predictive Analytics: Early detection of substance use disorders through pattern recognition in behavioral or epidemiological data; forecasting return to use risks, forecasting suicide likelihood, or treatment non-adherence to enable timely interventions, utilization of AI prediction modeling of possible returns-to-use.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: Wearable devices paired with AI to track physiological stress markers or cravings and trigger coping strategies during recovery.
  • Balancing Efficiency with Empathy: Preventing depersonalization of care while maintaining human connection in AI-driven interactions.
  • Clinical Oversight: Safeguarding clinician autonomy against overreliance on AI tools.
  • Interdisciplinary Perspectives: Commentaries, position papers, and ethical frameworks addressing tensions between technology, clinical practice, and policy. AI  across worldwide geographic regions.
  • Recovery Support: Wearables and AI for real-time stress/craving monitoring and adaptive coping strategies.
  • Ethical Frameworks: Guidelines to mitigate algorithmic bias in marginalized communities, equity, transparency, and human-centric design in AI applications.
  • Human-AI Collaboration: Strategies balancing AI recommendations with clinician judgement, empathy, and cultural competence.
  • Policy: Shaping practice standards through interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Utilization of AI in documentation and record-keeping.
