Advances in Human-Computer Interaction in Advanced Manufacturing Systems
Currently, a new industrial revolution, also known as Industry 5.0, is transforming the manufacturing industry towards greater production efficiency, more enhanced digitalization and intelligence, more integrated human-machine collaboration, higher product complexity and greater customization flexibility. In the era of Industry 5.0 and smart factories, advanced manufacturing systems are changing traditional production models by integrating cutting-edge technologies such as cyber-physical systems, digital twin, big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Collaborative robots equipped with advanced sensors and AI are considered to be the key enablers of future manufacturing. At the core of these transformations is the key interface between humans and machines - human-computer interaction (HCI). As an emerging cross-disciplinary subject, HCI is dedicated to exploring the relationship between humans and technology, computers/robots, environments and systems, and is able to improve interfaces by innovating in software and hardware design and combining cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, multimodal interaction and bio-signal processing. As manufacturing systems become more complex and autonomous, the role of HCI in ensuring efficient, safe and user-centric operations will become increasingly important.
However, with the emergence of new production methods in advanced manufacturing systems, there are also some new problems that need to be solved. The current level of collaboration between humans and robots is far below expectations. The most basic issues of how workers interact with robots, such as the degree of trust workers have in human-robot interaction robots, have not been discussed and resolved in depth. In addition, a single interface cannot achieve stable system interaction, which requires further improvement of the integration of multiple interfaces and multi-sensory channels to improve the reliability and stability of the interactive system.
Therefore, this special issue aims to explore the latest progress, challenges, and opportunities of HCI in advanced manufacturing systems, and to provide new insights to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers at the intersection of HCI and advanced manufacturing systems, thereby stimulating new ideas, collaborations, and innovations to shape the future of advanced manufacturing. The special issue welcomes original research articles and review papers that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Intelligent user interfaces for advanced manufacturing systems
- Adaptive and personalized manufacturing workflow design
- Human robot interaction and collaboration
- Human-AI collaborative design processes
- Big data analytics for HCI in manufacturing
