Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Buildings for Smart Cities

Adopting sustainable lifestyle choices and raising knowledge of sustainable building practices will go a long way toward reducing energy consumption. Sustainable home activities and lifestyles can significantly aid energy efficiency and conservation. Higher energy efficiency will help to ensure global sustainability. Buildings account for 40% of total energy use. Smart Grids and Smart Buildings are critical components in developing the next generation of sustainable Smart Cities.

A green building is designed, built, and operated to have the least negative environmental impact possible. The basic concept of green building is to carve out good strategies and techniques for minimizing human and ecological health effects, thereby improving energy efficiency. The idea of the green building promotes the optimal utilization of renewable energy resources such as sunlight through active solar, passive solar, and photovoltaic equipment, rain gardens, green roofs, and rainwater conservation. It emphasizes energy economy and preservation, as well as water and air quality, through meticulous design. The green building concept is also known as "Sustainable Architecture" or "Ecological Design" since it is based on long-term development. It reduces the need for fossil fuel-based energy during building and operation and maximizes recycling, reuse, renewable energy, and energy-efficient equipment and appliances. It uses energy-efficient building materials and considers water conservation, waste management, and energy conservation, among other things. Solar water heating systems, rooftop PV systems, waste recycling for energy generation, and other renewable energy technologies are promoted in green buildings.

The Internet of Energy (IoE) incorporates Internet of Things (IoT) technology into distributed energy systems to improve energy efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental concerns. IoE technology includes smart sensors and renewable energy integration. Housing, ventilation and air conditioning, fire safety, water, security and surveillance, and lighting provide data to a central cloud-based network and collaborate via IoT (Building management System – BMS). The vast amount of data gathered can identify patterns and create a predictive model that improves performance and efficiency. Intelligent computation comprises analyzing and implementing various technologies for smarter cities, including smart buildings, smart manufacturing, intelligent transportation, and smart data-driven decision-making. In addition, dynamic artificial intelligence disciplines like machine learning, data mining, and semantic web, among others, offer unique and complicated techniques as scalable, intelligent solutions.
