Adult and adolescent reading: transitions and change

We are putting together a Changing English Special Issue with a focus on adult and adolescent reading, to gather the important work being done internationally in these areas. The focus will be on understanding adult and adolescent reading practices in relation to sociocultural and technological changes as well as life transitions, including the roles that institutions (educational, work, religious, governmental) play in shaping and developing what is seen as reading, who are seen as readers, and what counts in the politics and discussions of reading.

We would love this special issue to interrogate contemporary reading practices in diverse contexts, including (but not limited to) work, religious, home, family, sports, prisons and educational institutions, and the intersections between these spaces. We are interested in studies that examine the multiple technologies for reading, both in print and on screen, issues of access and divides, changes and how institutions and tools reshape practice.

Submission Instructions

We welcome studies interrogating:

  • Forms and functions of adult and adolescent reading across the various life domains/contexts
  • Reading and sociocultural and technological change, including access to technologies, digital divides
  • How institutions and tools shape practices
  • Ecologies of print and digital reading practices, including book cultures and new media literacies
  • The breadth of what we might understand by ‘reading’ and ‘readers’
  • Reading and life transitions
