Call for Papers

The Editors and the Editorial Board of Social Work Education: the International Journal are excited to draw your attention to a new development. The journal’s reputation has been built upon a commitment to publishing articles that examine a range of issues and approaches related t social work education from across the globe. The international reach of the journal continues to broaden with newly appointed advisory boards in Africa and East Asia increasing the visibility and accessibility of the journal in these regions. This global mindset highlights many synergies and differences in the field of social work education and provides fertile ground for knowledge sharing, viewpoint diversity, critical debates and innovation. We want to reflect this environment by explicitly encouraging authors to consider submitting articles that explore the ‘taken for granted’ orthodoxies of social work education and/or might grapple with ‘wicked’ (complex or seemingly intractable) problems and ethical dilemmas.

Research published in this and other journals suggests that critical thinking skills might be lacking in our newly qualified social workers (Sheppard and Charles, 2017; Sheppard et al, 2018). In the light of these findings, Social Work Education seeks to be a platform for sharing ideas among the academics  who ultimately engage with and influence students. Therefore, we want to attract articles that lend themselves to fostering critical thinking and open enquiry. Such articles might:

  • Tackle controversial subjects
  • Attempt to think through difficult and complex ethical dilemmas
  • Be underpinned by different ideological positions
  • Attempt to deal with wicked problems
  • Foster constructive debate

We believe such articles will be hugely interesting to our readership and will prompt and develop the criticality and liminality that is central to social work education and so crucially required in practice.  The list above highlights the type of academic terrain we hope you will consider navigating whist ensuring that hallmarks of social work education such as consistency with social work values are upheld.
