Special Issue

Small Business and Entrepreneurship in Africa

Entrepreneurship and Small Business activity in Africa has traditionally been lower than other parts of the world due to the role large state-owned enterprises have taken in the economy. This has rapidly changed in the past couple of years with innovative African start ups taking prominence in the global economy. Telecommunications and digital technology have increased the ability of African small business owners to enter into new business opportunities. This has made it a very exciting time for small businesses and entrepreneurs in Africa particularly in terms of internationalization patterns. In addition, there is now more emphasis on entrepreneurship education and training programs in Africa that is further transforming small business. Whilst there is still a disparity amongst rich and poor African countries there seems to be an increased realization of the power entrepreneurship can bring to communities. This is apparent particularly in rural communities and artisan groups in Africa that require innovation to be competitive. In addition, tourism entrepreneurs are capitalizing on cultural and heritage to conduct new business activities. The quality of life for people in Africa will benefit from more emphasis on small business and entrepreneurship. The aim of this special journal issue is to advance the research on small business and entrepreneurship in Africa. This will lead to new theories that take into account the cultural, historical and social context of Africa. In addition, the special journal issue will enable more dissemination of knowledge specifically related to Africa from a research, practitioner and policy perspective. Thus, this special journal issue encourages researchers to submit their work on topics such as:

  • African digital and knowledge economy entrepreneurs
  • Ethnic minority business in Africa
  • Informal and subsistence entrepreneurship in Africa
  • Community-based entrepreneurship
  • African tourism and hospitality entrepreneurs
  • Women entrepreneurship amongst African communities
  • Social media and entertainment entrepreneurs in Africa
  • International entrepreneurship in Africa
  • Family small business issues and succession planning
  • Home-based and artisan entrepreneurship in Africa
  • Enterprise Policy
  • Entrepreneurship / Small Business Training
