Smart and Resilient Societies to Counter Environmental Hazards

Introduction

As the world is facing increasing environmental challenges such as climate change, natural hazards and environmental degradation, policy makers and planners need to develop appropriate solutions to build smart and resilient societies, which are essential for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Smart and resilient societies emphasise civic engagement, transparent governance and multi-stakeholder collaboration, in which advanced technologies and innovative strategies are used to enhance the ability of social, economic and environmental systems to prevent, respond to and recover from environmental hazards, and, ultimately, to achieve stable economic growth, social equity and inclusion, and environmental protection.

Accordingly, this special issue aims to explore and demonstrate how to build smart and resilient societies from the perspective of environmental hazard prevention and response, with a special focus on the impacts of environmental hazards on social, economic, and environmental systems, thus providing effective theoretical insights, governance strategies, and practical examples for reducing environmental hazards. Theoretical and methodological findings for resilience research are also welcome. The call aims to collect fields from, but not limited to, disaster studies, urban science, social policy, information technology. Especially, the articles need (a) to match the aims of the journal “Environmental Hazards: Human and Policy Dimensions”, (b) to contain original research/insights, and (c) with an environmental hazard perspective.
