Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Studies
About the role
Applications are invited from researchers based at an African university or research institution to fill a Co-Editor position for Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Studies that will become vacant in January 2022. Duties will begin during a transition period with the current editorial team a few weeks before the official start of the appointment. Safundi is committed to ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion within its editorial team and decision making processes, and at this time the journal is specifically seeking applications from Africa-based scholars. Safundi’s core editorial team usually comprises a Lead Editor and two Co-Editors. As a member of the Safundi editorial team, Co-Editors play a vital role in the publication process and the success of the journal. Working collaboratively with their editorial colleagues, overseen by the Lead Editor, Co-Editors help to achieve the journal’s mission by performing the following functions:
• Solicit, receive, and process new contributions to the journal through peer review, ensuring that all reviewers and authors uphold the journal’s code of publishing ethics.
• Encourage the submission of manuscripts to the journal from established researchers in the field and from promising new scholars.
• Identify strategies to enhance and maintain the quality and reputation of the journal, particularly relating to the quality and timeliness of the published research.
• Review and expand the pool of reviewers (referees) as necessary, in terms of size, topic specialty, and geographical representation.
• Work with the Safundi editorial team to develop the editorial strategy and direction of the journal and to act as ambassador for the journal, for example by promoting it at conferences or workshops attended by potential readers.
• Participate in meetings - virtually, or in person should the opportunity arise - with other members of the Safundi editorial team as required and maintain active correspondence with editorial colleagues, providing useful feedback and suggesting possible strategies. To assure that the integrity and reputation of the journal is maintained at all times, Safundi Co-Editors are expected to adhere to the publishing ethics outlined in the Taylor & Francis Editor Code of Conduct [https://editorresources.taylorandfrancis.com/welcome-to-tf/policies-guidelines/editor-code-of-conduct/], which is linked to the COPE Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. [http://publicationethics.org/files/Code_of_conduct_for_journal_editors_0.pdf] Applicants should have recognised expertise and an established record of published scholarship and should be actively involved with international networks within the field. Expertise in South African Studies is mandatory; additional expertise in American Studies is a very significant plus, as is familiarity with comparative and/or transnational methodologies. Applicants should have an institutional base on the African continent and previous editorial and peer review experience will be assets. Although candidates in any discipline with the above qualifications are encouraged to apply, we are especially seeking candidates with expertise in any of these disciplines and areas:

Key qualities sought for the position of Co-Editor include energy, enthusiasm, organizational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines and work effectively within a team and with a major commercial publisher. Applicants should have employer or institutional support for this voluntary activity for the duration of the three-year appointment. A small annual stipend is available to Co-Editors as a contribution toward the costs of postage, equipment, travel to attend editorial team meetings, etc.

Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Studies, founded in 1999, is a quarterly, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary, international journal specializing in comparative or transnational approaches to the study of South African and US cultures and societies, seeking to understand each country in relation to the other. We publish on topics in fields across the humanities and qualitative social sciences, including but not limited to: anthropology, sociology, human and cultural geography, history, music, languages and literatures, communications and media studies, and visual cultures and film. The title derives from the initial letters of South Africa and America and the word fundi, which comes from the isiXhosa and isiZulu verb -funda, which translates as “to read” or “to learn.” In addition to academic research articles and essays, we regularly publish roundtables on topical issues, book reviews, and booknotes surveying recent publications and releases on topics relevant to Safundi’s readers.
