Special Issue Call for Papers
Open Source Innovation
Research-Technology Management, the award-winning journal of the Innovation Research Interchange, seeks articles for a special issue on Open Source Innovation. Open source approaches to innovation and the management of new product development are growing in both scope and scale. Open source software has assumed a vital role in enterprise software development and operations; open source hardware has grown from niche offerings to a broader phenomenon, spurred by the growth of 3D printing; and open source biology is growing rapidly. Open source business models are becoming important in some industries, and approaches to managing intellectual property are changing as IP commons emerge in different industries and online communities to support the development and sharing of IP grow.
We are looking for articles that describe the opportunities and challenges of managing innovation in a world of where open business models operate alongside of closed ones. Specifically, we are interested in understanding how industrial companies manage their relationships with open source communities, contribute to the development of open source projects, compete with or create open source business models, and modify IP management practices to accommodate open source efforts, as well as whether and how they open their products to customers and competitors. Of interest are approaches and practices that leaders and teams have used in engaging with open source approaches and communities, new capabilities that enable open source business models, new skills required by R&D organizations to engage with open source models, and case studies of companies exploring open source as a capability.
RTM articles are original, concise, and practice centered, offering practical information, case studies, and tools and frameworks readers can put to work immediately. We prefer submissions at around 4,000–4,500 words, although we will publish truly groundbreaking pieces as long as 5,000 words. For more information, including author’s guidelines and submission procedures, visit us on the journal website.
To be considered for the special issue, articles should be submitted by September 1, 2019, via RTM’s Editorial Manager system. Please select Special Issue Article as the article type and note the special issue title in the appropriate space.
