Optomechatronics systems synergistically combine optical, mechanical, and electrical components to increase the autonomy on various industrial sectors. As the complexity of recent engineering procedures is constantly accelerating, modern optomechatronics should support and promote the interaction between visual sensing and numerous other technologies, such as signal processing, modality fusion, actuation, manipulation, control, task scheduling, efficient hardware and software development, and so on. In order to cope with such a burden, modern optomechatronics devices ought to be equipped with sophisticated cognitive and reasoning. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have proven its capacity to manage this level of complex integration by combining multiple sources of information and adapting or reconfiguring their function over a broad spectrum of operational conditions.

The overall objective of this article collection is to render the sine qua non role of intelligence in boosting the autonomy of optomechatronics systems. Towards this end, we look for original work addressing the particular challenges of this field, both for academic and industrial viewpoints. The topics of interest include the application of machine learning techniques to any of, but not limited to, the following areas:

The journal operates a single blind peer review policy. 

All accepted articles will be made freely and permanently available online through gold open access publication.
