Interview with Michelle S. Itano – Editor-in-Chief of BioTechniques

Please describe your specific area of research and how it relates to the BioTechniques journal. 

My research focuses on molecular and cellular biology with an emphasis on developing and disseminating innovative imaging techniques, aligning closely with BioTechniques’ mission to showcase methodological advances that drive discovery across the life sciences. 

What does BioTechniques aim to address, and what are the key questions or challenges within the fields relevant to the journal? 

BioTechniques aims to highlight cutting-edge methods that solve practical experimental challenges, with a focus on reproducibility, sensitivity, and scalability across molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, and imaging sciences. 

How can research published in BioTechniques be applied to and benefit broader industries? 

Research published in BioTechniques often translates into improved diagnostic tools, drug development workflows, and biomanufacturing processes, making it highly relevant to medical, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries. This can include optimized or innovative protocols, new applications of research techniques, and expert perspectives on emerging issues impacting human health. 

Is there any cutting-edge research coming out of the field that has caught your attention recently? 

 I’m particularly excited by recent advances in spatial transcriptomics and CRISPR-based diagnostics, which are rapidly transforming how we interrogate complex biological systems in both research and clinical settings. Additionally, new collaborations in many fields incorporating advanced AI applications and computational tools are enabling new breakthroughs in research. 

What does the role of Editor-in-Chief entail? 

As Editor-in-Chief, I work with the journal’s staff and Editorial Board to guide the journal’s scientific vision, oversee peer review and editorial standards, and work to ensure that BioTechniques remains a trusted resource for methodological innovation. 

Why should other researchers within your field consider submitting their work to BioTechniques? 

Researchers should consider BioTechniques for its rapid, rigorous review process and its focus and well-established reputation on publishing practical, high-impact methods that are broadly applicable and widely cited.
