Best Map Award 2010

Rescaling the Past through Mosaic Historical Cartography

Donald Lafreniere (University of Western Ontario) and Douglas Rivet (Western Michigan University)

This atlas is diligently compiled and combines a good cartographic product with innovation to overcome the problem of visualising historical data across an international boundary (Canada and the United States). The result is a series of maps that show how Sandwich has changed over a 200 year period. They also discuss a technique that can be employed more widely.
