Rising Star Award 2018

Geografiska Annaler Series B

About the prize

The Editors of Geografiska Annaler Series B, Human Geography present the annual Rising Star Award to an early career researcher who has published in the journal.

The Editors are pleased to announce the 2018 Rising Star Award will go to Federico Ferretti for his article ‘Imperial ambivalences. Histories of lady travellers and the French explorer Octavie Renard-Coudreau (1867–1938)’.

This article focuses on Octavie Renard-Coudreau, who explored the tributaries of the Amazon River, first with her husband and then continuing after his death, and wrote six books for the French-speaking public. The article discusses the interplay of the time-context, geographical environment, gender, social positions and subjectivity. Federico’s achievement is to combine a fascinating story with a creative approach that explains the notion of ‘ambivalences’ which frame the story.
