Vilakazi Prize

African Studies

About the prize

African Studies is pleased to announce the winner of 2016 Vilakazi Prize, for articles published in any one full volume set of issues.

The adjudicating panel, consisting of two working editors, two members of the editorial board and one other member with suitable expertise and experience, have decided the award of R10,000 will go to Doseline Kiguru for her article ”Literary Prizes, Writers’ Organisations and Canon Formation in Africa”.

The panel gave reasoning as to their choice: “…Doseline Kiguru compellingly engages with cutting-edge ideas of literary production and value in world literature and African literature. Lucidly presented and finely sourced, the article also illuminates the opaque writing-award process and its politics of choice and celebration.”
