The Role of Place in Later Life

Call for Papers

Abstract Deadline: 15 March  2019

Submission Guidelines

Potential authors should visit the Journal of Women & Aging website to review the Instructions for Authors and specific guidelines for the various types of manuscripts. Importantly, submissions must include a cover letter formatted as requested in the instructions for authors. In all manuscripts, the number of words, references, and tables/figures must correspond to the specific JWA article format. Select manuscripts will undergo editorial review and eventual peer review by the JWA editors and peer referees. Authors will be asked to name three or four potential referees.

The first step in the review process will be submission of an abstract to Joyce Weil, associate editor. The deadline for abstract submission is March 15, 2019. Authors will find out by March 22, 2019 if they will be asked for a full manuscript that will need to be submitted by May 31, 2019. Those invited manuscripts should be submitted via the online submission system with an indication that they are intended for this special issue. When the full manuscript is submitted initially, it will be sent out to reviewers, who will be expected to complete their reviews by July 15. The reviewers’ comments will then be returned to authors for revisions, no later than July 31.  Authors’ revised, final invited manuscripts, including edits based on reviewers’ comments, must be ready for publication by October 9, 2019. For additional information about this special collection of articles, please contact Joyce Weil, associate editor.

The Role of Place in Later Life

Person-environment fit models are at the core of gerontological theory and practice. With the evolution and expansion of aging in place and age-friendly concepts across the continuum of care, increasingly diverse older populations, and the changing meaning of place, we need to assess and redesign these models of “fit”. The Journal of Women & Aging (JWA) seeks papers for a special issue about the role of place in later life—with articles that focus on aging and the relationship of older persons and their environments in many contexts. This special issue is planned for the November-December 2019 volume of the journal.

Original research articles of all methodological approaches (qualitative, quantitative, mixed, or emergent methods), brief reports/commentaries, secondary data analyses, and systematic/ scoping reviews are invited.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to: the meaning of place to older women, new understandings of the idea of “place” and aging, innovative home or place-based programs, new approaches to age-friendly partnerships, multi-age and intergenerational community models, geographic-based place research (e.g., studies looking at neighborhoods or rural places), policy work related to place, and so on.
