About the Article Collection

Expert Review of Vaccines is pleased to invite you to the upcoming Article Collection “The evolving landscape of respiratory viral vaccine development.”

As respiratory viral infections continue to pose significant global health challenges, the need for effective vaccines has never been more pressing. Seasonal and pandemic influenza, alongside more recent threats such as COVID-19 and RSV, continue to strain healthcare systems and drive substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. Vaccine research has therefore become a critical focus for scientists, healthcare professionals, and policymakers alike, and substantial progress has been made in our understanding of immune responses to respiratory viruses, and developing more precise vaccine platforms.

New technologies, such as mRNA-based platforms, have been groundbreaking in their ability to rapidly produce vaccines and demonstrate a high level of efficacy, even in the face of emerging viral variants. These advancements, pivotal in the fight against the recent COVID-19 pandemic, now pave the way for the next generation of respiratory viral vaccines. Beyond influenza and coronaviruses, viruses such as human metapneumovirus (hMPV) and human parainfluenza viruses (hPIVs) contribute significantly to the global burden of respiratory disease and are gaining attention as important vaccine targets.

This Article Collection will explore the latest trends and breakthroughs in respiratory viral vaccine development, including novel platforms, delivery systems, and strategies to address emerging viral variants. The Collection will also focus on the role of vaccines in protecting vulnerable groups such as infants and older adults, who remain at a heightened risk of severe respiratory infections.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Novel vaccine platforms (e.g. mRNA, viral vectors, protein subunits, intranasal delivery)

  • Adjuvants and delivery systems tailored for respiratory mucosa

  • Mucosal and systemic immune responses to respiratory vaccines

  • Cross-protective and universal vaccine strategies for influenza, RSV, coronaviruses and beyond

  • Vaccine development for other respiratory pathogens such as hMPV and hPIVs

  • Interactions between viruses, bacteria and the microbiome/virome that could influence vaccine effectiveness or direct strategies for immunisation

  • Clinical evaluation, human challenge models, and real-world effectiveness

  • EVaccination strategies for vulnerable and high-risk populations, including infants and older adultsxample

  • Vaccine access, equity, and global policy

By highlighting the collaborations between researchers, biotech companies, and public health agencies, this series of articles will offer a snapshot of both current progress and prospects in respiratory viral vaccine innovation.

The benefit of publishing as part of an Article Collection is that they often become a key resource, driving a research community forward. This has a synergistic effect on every article in the Collection. The articles often receive more views and higher citation numbers as the Collections receive increased promotion via social media and our marketing team.

If you are interested in contributing to the Article Collection or want to learn more, then please reach out to the Commissioning Editor, Marya Baig, who will be happy to assist.
