Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research- Research and innovations in medication adherence
About the special issue
Non-adherence to medication is one of the major challenges of healthcare systems worldwide. Medication non-adherence affects up to 20-50% of patients with chronic disorders, resulting in not only increased healthcare costs but also increased mortality and morbidity. The aging population has increased the number of patients on polypharmacotherapy, and as such, the issue of non-adherence has become even more pressing. In the last decades, several technologies and interventions have been developed to improve medication adherence. However, there are still evidence gaps in the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of these interventions, while only a few have been implemented in clinical practice.
To show our commitment to this vital area of research, Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research is publishing a special issue on medication adherence in 2024. The special issue is guest advised by Dr Tamás Ágh (Syreon Research Institute & University of Pecs). This issue will explore research areas currently shaping the field of medication adherence, including adherence monitoring and measurement, clinical and economic burden of medication nonadherence in acute and chronic disorders, medication adherence enhancing interventions in different populations (e.g. pediatrics, elderly, individuals with certain medical conditions) and settings (e.g. primary care, clinical pharmacy), and health economic and policy aspects of medication adherence.
