Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery- 3D printing & biofabrication in drug delivery

About the special issue

New materials and manufacturing techniques are emerging with the potential to address the challenges associated with the manufacture of pharmaceutical systems that will teach new tricks to old drugs and on the development of new personalized medical devices. Current medical developments are aiming to achieve personalized medicine adapted to patients’ needs. Moreover, technological advances in healthcare must continually develop to ensure that the world is prepared for any future diseases that may ensue. In this context, biofabrication (e.g., Bioprinting, Electrowriting / Melt electrospinning) and Additive manufacturing methods (e.g., 3D & 4D printing), allow for a patient-centered approach. Scaffolds, patches, long-acting implantable devices, microneedles, and oral films, among many others, have been successfully manufactured; however, some challenges must be overcome to shift to clinical practice.

With this special issue, we are planning to cover the recent advantages and future directions on 3D printing, Bioprinting and electrowriting methods, for the production of drug delivery systems. The issue welcomes authors to submit relevant editorials, reviews, technology evaluations, interviews, and original research. The benefit of publishing as part of a special issue is that the articles included often receive more views and higher citation numbers.
