Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery – Overcoming Biological Barriers: Delivery via the gastrointestinal tract
About the special issue
Biological barriers throughout the body present significant challenges for successful drug delivery. Due to the limitations of current methods, novel strategies are constantly evolving to overcome these shortcomings. Therefore, Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery is excited to announce the 2023 Special Issue Series – “Overcoming biological barriers”.
This issue will focus on the biological barrier of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal-based delivery is considered the favoured route of drug administration for both local and systemic treatment due to its ease for patients, non-invasiveness, and convenience for self-administration. Unfortunately, due to poor drug stability, poor drug solubility, and low drug permeability across the gastrointestinal mucosa, drug delivery via this route can be extremely challenging.
With contributions from world-class key opinion leaders across academia and industry, the issue will cover all aspects of drug delivery via the gastrointestinal tract. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
– Physiological factors effecting drug delivery
– Pathophysiological factors effecting drug delivery
– Gastroretentive delivery systems
– Regional drug targeting
– pH-responsive dosage forms
– Time-dependent dosage forms
– Biodegradable dosage forms
– Combination approaches
– Nanocarrier approaches
– Drug delivery devices
– Permeation enhancing methods
The issue welcomes authors to submit relevant editorials, reviews, technology evaluations, interviews, and original research. The benefit of publishing as part of a special issue is that the articles included often receive more views and higher citation numbers. If you are interested in contributing, or would like to learn more, then please reach out to the Commissioning Editor, Zoe Kenney, who will be happy to assist.
