The Regional Studies Association seeks to appoint a Digital Media and Papers Editor to its journal, Regional Studies, Regional Science.
About the journal
Regional Studies, Regional Science is an open access journal about regional and urban issues in geography, economics, regional science, environmental studies, planning and governance. RSRS explores a wide range of topics from across the social sciences at a variety of spatial scales, which are generally subnational (such as metropolitan regions, planning regions, etc.) but can cross jurisdictional boundaries (such as cross-border regions and institutions). It does not typically publish contributions that focus exclusively on the global or national scales unless there are demonstrable implications for debates at sub-national regional scales.

This role aims to develop the journal’s digital and social media presence and support the existing team of Editors in managing peer review of submissions. It is expected that the Digital Media and Papers Editor will manage the journal’s social media accounts and strategy to best disseminate journal content and engage with readers and followers about the journal, trends in the field and publishing tips and queries, as well as acting as a standard papers editors including facilitating peer review of submissions. The post is for commencement as soon as possible after the decision has been made.
The role of the Digital Media and Papers Editor is to:
- operate the Twitter and any other journal specific social media accounts on behalf of the journal to promote journal content and activities
- drive traffic to journal content and engage through these media with readers and followers of the journal
- expand the journal’s existing online presence and following
- make recommendations for new platforms and channels of communication and set up and operate these accounts in consultation with the Communications Officer at the RSA
- follow and inform editors and the Association about trends in the field
- provide a brief digital media report for the twice-yearly RSA Journals Committee meeting
- manage paper submissions including decisions on peer review for allocated submissions to the journal and make final decisions on their suitability for publication (NB the number of paper allocated will take into account the digital media work of the editor so as not to overload)
The Digital Media and Papers Editor will agree and establish a mission for the journal’s social media with the Association. They will be supported in all their activities by the Association and publisher, Routledge, who will in turn co-ordinate in-house activities, such as arranging for selected papers to be free to access and creating supporting marketing materials on an ad-hoc basis. The Digital Media and Papers Editor will work in close liaison with other members of the editorial team and in particular with the Editor-in-Chief and Journal Manager as well as the Association and Publisher.
In making expressions of interest candidates are invited to submit:
- A brief editorial manifesto outlining their intentions for further development of the academic excellence, relevance and scope of Regional Studies, Regional Science, including but not limited to:
- The journal’s current digital presence and its place in the regional studies communities, broadly defined;
- How the journal, and its digital and social media presence in particular, might be developed;
- The role of social media in scholarly research and its dissemination.
Please include any existing editorial experience and in particular any experience of managing peer review, social media accounts and other online presences. Any knowledge of legal and ethical issues in scholarly publishing should be outlined, as should any institutional support available, including any time allowance to undertake the editorial role.
