About the role

We are looking for Associate Editors with a background in one or more areas within the field of interiors, including design, architecture, history, theory, pedagogy, or a relevant adjacent field that engages issues of interior and interiority. It is a key role, but one that is achievable within a continuing busy working timetable.

Associate Editors are a part of the journal’s Editorial Board. Their main role is the management of the peer review of manuscripts by experts in the appropriate areas of the scholarly field. As such, they work directly with manuscript authors and peer reviewers.

Taylor & Francis will supply annual reports reflecting on the performance of the Journal. The Journal utilizes an online editorial office system, Editorial Manager.

Becoming an Associate Editor of the journal is a rewarding experience where you will build your own networks, promote the research that you are passionate about, and be recognized as a leading figure within the academic community.

Interiors: Design, Architecture, Culture brings together the best critical work on the analysis of all types of spaces. Interiors play a crucial role in the construction of identity and they represent power and control through the contestation or transgression of boundaries. Homes, offices, shopping malls, schools and hospitals, churches and restaurants are all embedded with meaning and evince particular, multi-sensory and psychological responses. This journal will investigate the complexities of the interior  environment’s orchestration and composition and its impact on the inhabitant from a trans-disciplinary perspective.

The interior is the journal’s central focus and contributions from interior design practitioners and theorists are welcome. It will embrace perspectives from a range of disciplines including anthropology, architecture, art and design history, cultural studies and visual culture, and it will place no limits in terms of either geography or chronology. The journal sets out to challenge divisions between theory and practice and aims to provide an essential forum for all those with an interest in the design, history and meaning of interiors

Key Skills and Attributes

Associate Editor responsibilities include:

  • Adhering to the Journal’s Guidelines on Publishing Ethics [https://editorresources.taylorandfrancis.com/welcome-to-tf/policies-guidelines/editor-code-of-conduct/] to assure the integrity and reputation of the Journal is always maintained. Taylor & Francis also refers you to the COPE Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors [https://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines/ethics-toolkit-editors];
  • Identifying and securing peer reviewers based on appropriate expertise and availability within the overall timeframe established by journal Editors;
  • Communicating with peer reviewers, providing them with anonymous review-ready manuscripts and following up with the collection of results;
  • Relaying peer review results to Editors, as well as reporting their own assessment of the overall quality of the manuscript, in order to enable their decision-making in regards to the acceptance status of the submission;
  • Notifying authors of the editorial decision and forwarding peer review results for authors’ further consideration;
  • Facilitating the submission of any revisions by the authors prior to the final publication-ready manuscript submission;
  • Attending monthly online Editorial Board meetings;
  • Promoting the journal, including current calls for submissions, through professional channels and recruiting future contributors.

  • Confidence to engage with authors and researchers to solicit the highest quality submissions;
  • The ability to foster positive working relationships with co-Editors and fellow Associate Editors.

    Appointments are made on a rolling basis. The commitment is for a two-year editorial cycle.

  • Where you believe the field is going, and the journal’s place within it;
  • How you would work in partnership with the co-Editors and editorial board;
  • How you would maintain and increase the quality of submissions;
  • How you would work with authors.
