About the role
Visual Anthropology is currently recruiting for a Film and Multimodal Reviews Editor.
This is an excellent opportunity for academics with a strong track record in Anthropology.
We are seeking a leader who will shape the journal’s editorial vision, expand its reach, accelerate growth in high quality submissions and citations, and foster a vibrant research community.
In this role, you will:
- Collaborate closely with the editorial board and reviewers to oversee a rigorous, fair, and timely peer-review process that delivers content of appropriate scope and quality to agreed publication schedules.
- Work with the Publisher to develop strategies to attract and commission high-impact submissions – including themed collections, expert perspectives, and reviews.
- Champion best practices in research integrity, transparency, and reproducibility.
- Promote the journal within the community, build networks across relevant disciplines, and support emerging areas of research.

About the Journal
Visual Anthropology is a scholarly journal which publishes original articles, book, film and multimodal reviews, photographic or video essays, and other multimodal and creative works. The journal is conceived as a dynamic arena for discussion and debate, open for researchers and specialists of the field at different stages of their career. It welcomes contributions and works from diverse authors.
Visual Anthropology focuses on visual, sensory, experimental and technological research, representation and curation undertaken with people and other species, in relation to social, experiential, cultural, ecological, or political phenomena.
Visual Anthropology also promotes the study, use, and production of anthropological and ethnographic films, videos, and photographs, as well as multimodal representations, animations and graphic anthropology, creative practice, and immersive and interactive formats for research, teaching and public engagement.
Visual Anthropology encourages participatory and collaborative knowledge production.

- Proven experience in academic publishing across the full editorial lifecycle.
- Skill in reading, synthesizing, and making sound editorial decisions based on reviewer reports.
- Willingness to lead and energize the Editorial Board, including organizing and chairing meetings.
- Recognized thought leadership and a strong professional reputation within your academic discipline.
- Expertise for attracting and commissioning high-impact submissions.
- A clear vision and enthusiasm for the journal’s ongoing development.
Operational Proficiency
- Ability to commit time each week to the role and to participate in Editorial Board meetings and training as needed.
- A track record of managing submitted manuscripts promptly, consistently, and professionally.
- Proficiency with online peer-review management systems, with the confidence to guide and support the editorial team in their use.
- Proactive engagement with Taylor & Francis staff and suppliers to implement processes and drive improvements.
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, the open access publishing environment.
Communication and Integrity
- Experience collaborating effectively with independent peer reviewers.
- Consistently prompt, professional communication with authors throughout the peer-review process.
- Uncompromising ethical standards; knowledge of COPE guidelines and a commitment to always uphold them.
- Active growth of academic networks through conference participation and professional use of social media.
