About the role
Journal of Housing and Society is currently recruiting for an Editor.
This is an excellent opportunity for academics with a strong track record in housing or closely related fields.
We are seeking a leader who will shape the journal’s editorial vision, expand its reach, accelerate growth in high-quality submissions and citations, and foster a vibrant research community.
In this role, you will:
Content –
- Produce three (3) journal issues each calendar year (Fall, Winter, Spring).
- In consultation with the editorial board and HERA, commission and curate at least two (2) special issues or thematic collections that advance impactful conversations in the field.
- Stay current with emerging trends in scholarly publishing - including AI tools, research integrity technologies, and evolving digital workflows - and ensure journal policies and guidance reflect responsible, ethical use of these innovations.
Leadership –
- Provide editorial leadership that sustains and enhances the journal’s standing as a leading international outlet for housing-related research.
- Develop and implement an editorial vision that reflects emerging trends, interdisciplinary perspectives, and innovations in both academic and practice-based housing scholarship.
- Support dissemination strategies, media promotion, author engagement, and outreach to international networks.
Production –
- Oversee the peer review process, including initial screening, reviewer selection, and editorial decision making.
- Assign manuscripts as appropriate to ensure a high-quality peer review process.
- Work closely with the publisher (Taylor & Francis) to manage the production workflow, including copyediting, layout, proofs, and final publication.
- Monitor journal metrics, submission trends, and reviewer performance.
Governance –
- Serve as a member of the Publications Committee and the Publications Policy Subcommittee. (Information about these committees is available upon request.)
- Collaborate with HERA leadership to ensure the journal’s mission, policies, and practices align with the association’s strategic priorities.
- Provide an annual editorial update at the HERA Conference, highlighting journal performance, initiatives, and future priorities.

About the Journal
Housing and Society is the journal of the Housing Education and Research Association (HERA). The journal supports the mission of HERA by providing for the dissemination of research and other scholarly work. Submissions from a broad range of perspectives are encouraged. Topics in housing include: policy, design, social aspects, gerontology, behavioral aspects, energy/environment, equipment, interiors, economics, theory/model development, education, and program development or evaluation.
The journal welcomes the submission of original research articles, notes and commentaries. Notes are shorter manuscripts presenting succinct information on housing related to one of the following categories:
- Research: exploratory or not heavily theory-based or statistically analyzed
- Academic: innovative teaching ideas
- Program: development, implementation, and/or evaluation of Cooperative Extension or other housing programming efforts
- Policy: examination of policy impact, comparative analysis, and/or need to achieve housing goals
- Reviews: books, documentaries, etc.
Peer Review Statement
All submissions to Housing and Society undergo rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and double-anonymized review by at least two referees.

- A strong record of publication in peer-reviewed journals, demonstrating expertise in housing or closely related fields.
- Proven experience in academic publishing across the full editorial lifecycle.
- Skill in reading, synthesizing, and making sound editorial decisions based on reviewer reports.
- Willingness to lead and energize the Editorial Board, including organizing and chairing meetings.
- Recognized thought leadership and a strong professional reputation within your academic discipline.
- Expertise for attracting and commissioning high-impact submissions.
- A clear vision and enthusiasm for the journal’s ongoing development.
Operational Proficiency
- Ability to commit time each week to the role and to participate in Editorial Board meetings and training as needed.
- A track record of managing submitted manuscripts promptly, consistently, and professionally.
- Proficiency with online peer-review management systems, with the confidence to guide and support the editorial team in their use.
- Proactive engagement with Taylor & Francis staff and suppliers to implement processes and drive improvements.
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, the open access publishing environment.
Communication and Integrity
- Experience collaborating effectively with independent peer reviewers.
- Consistently prompt, professional communication with authors throughout the peer-review process.
- Uncompromising ethical standards; knowledge of COPE guidelines and a commitment to always uphold them.

Editorial Experience –
Describe your relevant editorial background, prior roles (editor, associate editor, editorial board member, guest editor), experience with peer review management, and any familiarity with production workflows.
Scholarly Qualifications –
Summarize areas of research expertise relevant to housing or closely related fields. Include evidence of a strong record of publication in peer reviewed journals and interdisciplinary research contributions.
Editorial Vision –
How would you develop and implement an editorial strategy that reflects emerging trends, interdisciplinary perspectives, and innovations in housing scholarship?
What topics would you consider for the two (2) required special issues or thematic collections during the 5-year tenure of the role?
How would you ensure responsible, ethical use of AI tools, research integrity technologies, and evolving digital workflows within the journal’s policies and peer review processes?
Institutional Support –
Provide any details associated with a workload adjustment, administrative support, or any additional resources you have access to in support of your role as journal editor.
Conflict of Interest Disclosure –
Summarize editorial roles with other journals, leadership roles in organizations that may overlap with HERA, and any potential conflicts related to authors, reviewers, or publishers.
