About the role

We are looking for the right candidate to join PSSi as a Deputy Editor in 2024 with the expectation to transition into the Editor-in-Chief role from the start of 2025. Candidates should have a background in heteroatom chemistry and the passion to drive the journal forward. It is a significant role, but one that is achievable within a continuing busy working schedule.

The successful candidate will be responsible for editorial oversight, decision-making on submissions and leading and working successfully with an Associate Editor on the journal. They will have authority to accept articles following successful peer review and will ensure that reviewers and authors adhere to the Journal’s Code of Publishing Ethics.

Taylor & Francis will provide remuneration for the role to cover any journal-related expenses. Taylor & Francis will also organize regular board meetings, and we will supply annual reports reflecting on the performance of the Journal. The Journal utilizes an online editorial office system which the Editor will be offered training on, and on which peer-review admin support is provided.

The role will include the following editorial duties:

  • Be an Ambassador for the Journal; build, nurture, and grow a community around it
  • Increase awareness of the articles published in the Journal in all relevant communities and amongst colleagues
  • With Taylor & Francis, identify strategies to enhance the quality and reputation of the Journal, its citation levels, and readership/circulation
  • Expand the current Editorial Board and reviewer pool, and subsequently work with these scholars and industry representatives to advance the Journal’s quality, profile, and impact
  • Encourage the submission of articles to the Journal from expert researchers in the field including colleagues
  • Generate ideas for Special Issues and reviews
  • Ensure that published content reflects the highest standards of academic and scientific rigor and excellence
  • Handle the peer review of contributions via the Editorial Manager online submission system using editorial best practices. Liaise with authors in order to take manuscripts to acceptance and make any necessary corrections
  • With Taylor & Francis, convene annual editorial board conference calls to review Journal performance and discuss strategy
  • Liaise with Taylor & Francis and Board members regarding future strategy and direction of the Journal as well as flow of submissions etc.
  • Work alongside the Associate Editor to manage and develop the journal

Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Silicon and the Related Elements is a monthly publication intended to disseminate current trends and novel methods to those working in the broad and interdisciplinary field of heteroatom chemistry. We publish research articles, review articles, communications, methods, and data notes involving chemistry in which select heteroatoms play a pivotal, central role to the presentation. We therefore consider papers on:

  • (Bio)organic, (bio)inorganic, heterocyclic, polymer, theoretical, structural, computational, catalytic, interdisciplinary, and spectroscopic chemistry of second row (and beyond) heteroatoms
  • The chemistry of phosphorus (including heavier Group 15 elements), sulfur (including heavier Group 16 elements), and silicon (including heavier Group 14 elements).

Pertinent research extending into the lighter main group elements may be considered, if sufficiently justified.

While not every candidate will hold all the following qualifications, and each candidate’s application will be weighed individually, we value the following:

  • Demonstrated scholarship in heteroatom chemistry, as well as commitment to the value of scholarship and the literature.
  • Previous editorial experience of some kind (editor, editorial board member, regular reviewer), and a proven ability to manage the editorial process
  • Someone who is active in the community with strong personal networks
  • Confidence to engage with authors and researchers to solicit the highest quality submissions
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure that submissions are handled in a timely manner
  • The ability to foster positive working relationships with colleagues such as an Associate Editor
  • Enthusiasm about the Journal’s mission with positive vision for its development
  • Interest or experience in Open Access publishing

The successful candidate will act in the capacity of Deputy Editor, working alongside our interim Editor-in-Chief throughout 2024, officially assuming the Editor-in-Chief role from January 2025.
