About the role

Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering is an Open Access and international peer reviewed academic journal which aims to foster and promote the scientific understanding and technological development in the areas of heat treatment and surface engineering of metals and other materials. We are looking for a new Editor with an academic background in the field as well as the passion to work with the Executive Editor, Dr Ning Yu, and the editorial board to drive the journal forward in an exciting period of change. It is a significant role, with high profile, but one that is achievable within a continuing busy working academic timetable.
The successful candidate will be responsible for editorial oversight and decision-making on submissions. They will have authority to accept articles following successful peer review and will ensure that reviewers and authors adhere to the Journal’s Code of Publishing Ethics. There will be an agreed handover period with the out-going Editor and the remaining Editors to ensure seamless transition.
Taylor & Francis will provide remuneration for the role to cover any journal-related expenses. Taylor & Francis will supply annual reports reflecting on the performance of the Journal. The Journal utilises an online editorial office system Editorial Manager. Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (HTSE) is an Open Access and international peer reviewed academic journal which aims to foster and promote the scientific understanding and technological development in the areas of heat treatment and surface engineering of metals and other materials. Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering is published by Taylor & Francis on behalf of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Chinese Heat Treatment Society of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society and publishes original research and critical review articles on the following themes:

  • Improved understanding of existing and emerging heat treatment and surface engineering processes;
  • Development of novel heat treatment and surface engineering processes;
  • Improved understanding of processes which are closely related to heat treatment and surface engineering processes such as thermomechanical processing of metals and other materials and surface coatings;
  • Novel microstructures and enhanced properties as a result of heat treatment and surface engineering;
  • Novel phenomena such as phase transformations and other property changes as a result of heat treatment and surface engineering;
  • Any other original research work which is closely related to the heat treatment and surface engineering of metals and other materials.

The Journal publishes Research Articles (2500-5000 words, up to 12 figures), Short Communications (up to 2500 words, up to 4 figures) and Review articles (up to 10,000 words). See the Instructions for Authors for more information on how to submit.

Key Skills and Attributes

Editorial duties:
• Be the Ambassador for the Journal; build, nurture, and grow a community around it.
• Increase awareness of the articles published in the Journal in all relevant communities and amongst colleagues.
• With Taylor & Francis, identify strategies to enhance the quality and reputation of the Journal, its citation levels, and readership/circulation.
• Expand the current Editorial Board and reviewer pool, and subsequently work with these scholars and industry representatives to advance the Journal’s quality, profile, and impact.
• Encourage the submission of articles to the Journal from expert researchers in the field including colleagues.
• Generate ideas for Special Issues and reviews.
• Ensure that published content reflects the highest standards of academic and scientific rigour and excellence.
• Handle the peer review of contributions via the Editorial Manager online submission system using editorial best practices. Liaise with authors in order to take manuscripts to acceptance and make any necessary corrections.
• With Taylor & Francis, convene annual editorial board conference calls to review Journal performance and discuss strategy.
• Liaise with Taylor & Francis and Board members regarding future strategy and direction of the Journal as well as flow of submissions etc.
Person specification:
While not every candidate will hold all the following qualifications, and each candidate’s application will be weighed individually, we value the following:
• Demonstrated scholarship in heat treatment and surface engineering research and practice, as well as commitment to the value of scholarship and the literature. Demonstrated industry awareness and involvement.
• Previous editorial experience of some kind (editor, editorial board member, regular reviewer), and a proven ability to manage the editorial process.
• Someone who is active in the community with strong personal networks.
• Confidence to engage with authors and researchers to solicit the highest quality submissions.
• Strong organizational skills to ensure that submissions are handled in a timely manner.
• The ability to foster positive working relationships with colleagues such as Associate Editors.
• Enthusiasm about the Journal’s mission with positive vision for its development.
