About the role

Early Child Development and Care is currently recruiting for a new Editor-in-Chief!

This role is a great opportunity for an academic with expertise in early childhood development, who has the commitment, drive and ability to help develop the journal.

Early Child Development and Care is a multidisciplinary journal by design, and we welcome applications from researchers working in any discipline, provided they can demonstrate expertise in alignment with the scope of the journal.

At the heart of the Journal Editor’s role is oversight and administration of a rigorous and proper peer review process. The peer review process will deliver:

  • An agreed minimum number of accepted articles every year
  • Within the Aims & Scope of the Journal
  • To an agreed minimum quality threshold
  • In an agreed publication timeframe
  • In accordance with the Taylor & Francis Editor Code of Conduct, with particular reference to Editorial ethics.

As the most senior Editor on the journal, you will have overall responsibility for content published therein and for maintaining strong relationships with the Associate Editors, the editorial board and the existing community of authors and reviewers.

The Editor-in-Chief role will involve:

  • Overseeing all stages of the publication process, from peer review to production
  • Managing the evaluation process for submitted manuscripts, through the online peer review system (ScholarOne)
  • Taking initial decisions on whether each submitted article is within the Journal’s scope and is appropriate for further independent peer review
  • Locating and inviting relevant reviewers for submissions
  • Evaluating submitted reviews to inform the submission of subsequent editorial decisions sent to authors (Revise, Accept, Reject, etc)
  • Delegating submissions to the Associate Editors in an efficient, equitable and fair way
  • Proactive mentoring of, and collaboration with, other members of the journal team (including Associate Editors, editorial board members and reviewers)
  • Recruiting new Associate Editors, editorial board members and reviewers
  • Creating a vision and strategy for the future development of the journal
  • Commissioning content for the Journal
  • Planning and organising Special Issues
  • Organising and attending virtual editorial board meetings
  • Attending virtual meetings with Taylor & Francis staff within standard UK working hours

Taylor & Francis provides an annual honorarium payment to cover editorial expenses.

The role will begin in September 2024.

Key Skills and Attributes

What we look for in a candidate:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a topic of relevance to the journal
  • Experience of working within academic institutions for a substantial period following completion of the PhD
  • A strong publication record, including relevant journal article publication/s within the last 2 years
  • Experience of academic publishing and familiarity with all stages of the process
  • A proven track record as a key opinion leader and known figure within your academic discipline
  • A creative mindset and proactive approach to taking forwards new initiatives in order to develop and grow the journal
  • A strong commitment to ethical rigour, including knowledge of the COPE guidelines and commitment to ensure that the journal adheres to strict ethical standards at all times
  • Actively involved in growing your academic networks through conference attendance and use of social media.

  • Where you believe the field is going, and the journal’s place within it
  • How you would work in partnership with the Editorial Board
  • How you would maintain and increase the quality of submissions
  • How you would work with authors.
