About the role

Applications are invited for the post of Symposium Editor for the British Journal of Guidance & Counselling. The post will commence in August 2023 and will be for an initial period of 3 years.

The British Journal of Guidance & Counselling is an international, interdisciplinary journal publishing work that sets trends and provokes fresh thought and innovations in the practice and understanding of counselling, psychotherapy and career guidance.

The journal publishes regular Symposium Issues, and these are managed by two Symposium Editors who work together to ensure interesting, topical and relevant Symposium Issues are ready for publication at least once per year.

Responsibilities:

  • to work in collaboration with the Symposium Co-Editor to develop a strategic forward plan of Symposium Issues and their Guest Editors for the next three years,
  • to support Guest Editors in bringing the Issue to fruition, advising on time scales and Editorial processes,
  • to make the final decision on publication of any submitted article for a Symposium Issue, in consultation with Guest Editors,
  • to virtually attend the Annual Editorial Board meeting.

A modest stipend is available for the role.

As an international journal, the British Journal of Guidance & Counselling provides a high quality platform to authors from across the globe, and from diverse cultural backgrounds and disciplines.

Manuscripts are published under three broad headings: (a) counselling and psychotherapy, (b) career counselling and career development in particular and (c) cross-disciplinary issues relevant to counselling, psychotherapy and career services.

Key Skills and Attributes

The successful applicant will have:

  • experience of publishing in peer reviewed journals and reviewing other authors’ work
  • a broad understanding of the work of the British Journal of Guidance & Counselling
  • interest and motivation to develop Symposium Issues that cover the broad scope of the journal
  • the capacity for forward planning
  • the flexibility to work with international authors
  • the ability to meet publication deadlines

  • Where you believe the field is going, and the journal’s place within it
  • How you would work in partnership with the Editorial Board
