About the role

Deafness & Education International (D&EI) is currently recruiting for a Book Review Editor. The Book Review Editor plays a pivotal role in overseeing the book review process of D&EI. This individual is responsible for curating, managing, and coordinating the review process for scholarly books, ensuring the publication maintains a high standard of academic excellence. The Book Review Editor collaborates closely with authors, reviewers, and the editorial team to select relevant publications for review, maintain the journal's reputation, and contribute to the scholarly discourse within the field.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Selection and Coordination: Identify books for potential review that align with the journal's scope and objectives—contact publishers, authors, and scholars to acquire review copies and establish review opportunities. Coordinate and assign books to qualified reviewers.
  • Quality Control: Evaluate the suitability of selected books for review based on their relevance, academic rigour, and contribution to the field. Ensure that reviews meet the journal's standards for critical analysis, scholarly merit, and clarity.
  • Reviewer Management: Recruit and manage a diverse pool of reviewers with expertise in various subfields related to the journal's focus. Provide guidance, instructions, and support to reviewers throughout the review process. Foster relationships with reviewers to maintain a reliable and competent reviewer database.
  • Timely Review Process: Establish and enforce deadlines for reviewers to ensure timely submission of reviews. Coordinate with authors and reviewers to facilitate an efficient review process, meeting publication schedules while maintaining high-quality content.
  • Editorial Collaboration: Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Editors to align book review content with the journal's strategic goals and maintain consistency in reviewing standards. Collaborate on editorial decisions regarding book selections and review content.

Deafness & Education International is an international peer-reviewed journal that publishes high-quality original research about the education of children and young people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Editors welcome manuscripts that are rigorous, adhere to ethical guidance, show thoroughness in the way the conclusions have been reached, and add important findings to the sector. The field of deaf education covers many disciplines including education, sociology, psychology, anthropology, linguistics, cultural studies and speech science. The Editors encourage authors to consider the implications of research findings to practice because the journal is read by educators and other professionals working directly with children and young people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Authors are also encouraged to apply findings to the international context.

Key Skills and Attributes

Ready to submit an expression of interest? Here are the qualifications we are looking for in a successful applicant:

  • Advanced degree (preferably a PhD) in a relevant field within the scope of deafness and education.
  • The capacity to devote time to the role, and to attend Editorial Board meetings, as needed.
  • Familiarity with academic databases, publishing processes, and ethical guidelines in scholarly publishing, such as oversight and administration of a rigorous and proper peer review process.
  • The ability to ensure all submitted manuscripts are considered in a prompt, consistent, and professional manner.
  • A strong commitment to ethical rigour as well as knowledge of the COPE guidelines and commitment to ensure that the journal adheres to strict ethical standards at all times.
  • Demonstrated expertise and active involvement in the scholarly community, with a strong publication record.
  • Experience with working effectively with independent peer reviewers.
  • The ability to read, summarize, and make decisions based on independent reviewer reports.
  • A commitment to communicating promptly, consistently, and professionally with authors and reviewers during the peer review process.
  • Ability to meet deadlines consistently.
  • Exceptional organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Actively involved in growing and developing your academic networks.
  • A commitment to engaging promptly and efficiently with Taylor & Francis staff and suppliers to implement necessary processes and improvements.
  • Enthusiasm for the continuous development of the journal.
