About the role

Journal of Health Equity – a new for 2024 open access journal – is currently recruiting for Associate Editors and Reviewers.

These roles are a great opportunity for individuals with a research or strong professional background in health equity, and who also have the commitment, drive and ability to help develop the journal.

About the journal

The Journal of Health Equity has been established in 2024 as a broad scope, sound science, interdisciplinary and interprofessional Gold Open Access international journal. It focuses on advancing research, policy, and practice relevant to Health Equity and the reduction of disparities in health.

The Journal aims to be the premier destination for discussion and dissemination of new and innovative research in the health equity field and related disciplines. The Editor welcomes rigorous original research from diverse fields illuminating the complex causes of health inequity and evaluations of efforts to promote health equity.

In addition to publishing original research, the Journal of Health Equity seeks to create a dialogue amongst researchers of different disciplines on how to put into practice improvements to equity in healthcare through the inclusion of case studies, policy analyses, and discussion pieces.

The Journal welcomes submissions on the following topics:

  • Health Equity principles, frameworks, and theories
  • Health policy, administration, services and systems
  • Health inequalities and social determinants of health
  • Public health and community partnerships
  • Racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic disparities
  • Maternal, newborn, and child health
  • Aging adults and chronic health disparities
  • Women’s reproductive health and contraception
  • Indigenous communities
  • Health justice
  • Epidemiology and population health sciences
  • Implementation, improvement, and interprofessional science
  • Nursing, medicine, and allied health professional perspectives and roles

Key Skills and Attributes

  • Ideas and enthusiasm for the continuous development of the journal.
  • A commitment to ethical rigour and commitment to ensure that the journal always adheres to strict ethical standards.
  • Experience with working effectively as part of a team.
  • The ability to consider submitted manuscripts in a prompt, consistent and professional manner.
  • Actively involved in growing and developing your academic networks through conference attendance and experience of networking through social media.
  • The capacity to devote time to the role, and a commitment to communicating promptly, consistently, and professionally.
  • Experience in academic publishing and familiarity with the process.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the open access publishing environment.
  • The ability to confidently use an online peer review system.

Associate Editor applications should also include a cover letter and a vision statement:

  • The short cover letter should detail your interest in applying and how you see your contribution to the journal.
  • Your vision statement should be no longer than 1 page and include:
    • Where you believe the field is going, and the journal’s place within it;
    • How you would work in partnership with the journal's Editorial Board;
    • How you would maintain the quality of submissions;
    • How you would recruit reviewers and improve the timing of the submission process;
    • How you would work with authors.
