Freely running: technology in water cycle automation

Water automation is a crucial part of providing safe water to nature, communities and businesses in order to keep them running. However, maintaining this automation is equally important, as without safe, clean water there is the possibility of many risks emerging. It is key for those working with water and its automation to stay on top of any possible issues and improvements, with the intention of continuing to facilitate the amount of water needed today.

How can those working with water ensure that technology is maximised for its benefits? This Article Collection intends to explore such questions by investigating the use of digital twins, assessing implementation science and taking a broader view on how to build upon the high-level water services currently provided globally.

This Article Collection will solicit articles related to the following subjects. However, we welcome all submissions related to the umbrella topic of water cycle automation:

  • Development of and implementation science behind Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
  • Use of digital twins in the water sector
    • How the impact of global events and changes in worldwide water usage can be accounted for in advance of real events
    • How digital twins can be used for technical capacity building
    • Integration of digital twins and technical knowledge in decision making
  • Improvements and progress in data collection methods (e.g., sensors, metering systems, GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and SCADAs (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
  • Use of artificial intelligence and related technologies at various points in the water cycle
  • Role of sensing and modelling technology in the challenges and solutions for water treatment, sanitisation and supply systems
