Profiles of Leaders in Clinical Supervision

In my inaugural editorial as the new Editor of The Clinical Supervisor, I invited readers to submit profiles of “persons who have made significant contributions to clinical supervision by helping advance the specialty through research, professional service and leadership, advocacy and other notable work” (Borders, 2015, pp. 3-4). I believe it is important that these leaders “be honored and remembered, so that we are always cognizant of how our current efforts are afforded by and build on their shoulders (p. 3)."

To provide further guidance to potential authors, I offer the following guidelines.

"Profiles would describe persons in the “autumn” of their professional careers who might be considered “icons” or “luminaries” for their work to advance the practice of clinical supervision, although persons recently deceased also could be featured. They would come from the range of disciplines, from multiple countries, in which clinical supervision is a key component in educating professionals and supporting them throughout their careers. The profiles would describe the leader’s contributions to the evolution of clinical supervision and, if possible, do so within the context of helping readers know the person as well as the professional. What motivated this person to devote so much of their professional work to clinical supervision?" 

Sources of information could include the following:

  • Interviews with the person being profiled
  • Interviews with colleagues, former students, and others
  • Personal interactions with the person being profiled
  • Review of publications and other relevant works.

Authors interested in writing a profile of a leader in clinical supervision should submit the following:

  • A statement explaining why this person deserves to be recognized through a profile
  • Proposed sources of information
  • Outline of the manuscript content
  • Statement regarding the author(s)’s relationship with the leader, and thus qualifications to construct the profile
  • Names and contact information of 2-3 professionals who would be informed reviewers of the proposal and the manuscript.

All manuscripts should adhere to the general guidelines for submissions to The Clinical Supervisor, including a maximum length of 30 pages, an abstract up to 100 words, constructed following APA style.
