About the role

We are currently seeking two Editorial Assistants at the International Journal of Early Years Education office. These honorary roles will offer successful applicants valuable editorial experience and opportunities to learn at first-hand many aspects of academic publication. Those appointed will assist the editorial team with pre-production and post-production of academic journal articles. Training will be provided. The work is conducted online.

The roles are open to all and may be of particular interest for doctoral students, post-docs and early career researchers in the field of early childhood education and care. It is intended that the appointments will begin on 1st December and will end on 30th November 2021 in the first instance.


The Role

The Editorial Assistants will work to support the Journal Editor. Specifically, this will include undertaking the general tasks below and one of the two roles outlined below.

General Tasks:

  • Promptly referring any ethical or copyright or legal issues to the Editor and the Publisher
  • Ensuring that they work in accordance with agreed and ethical peer review standards for the publication of articles, so as to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of peer review and assure the quality of published articles
  • Complying with data protection regulations (including GDPR) and ensure all user datais kept secure
  • Working with the Editor and the Publisher to promote the reputation, academic success, and prosperity of the Journal

Role 1:

  • Before peer review, administering the online peer-review-management system, ScholarOne, by carrying out the following tasks below entirely through the online peer review system:
    • Processing manuscripts through the system, subject to these manuscripts meeting checklist criteria, before peer review is conducted by the Editor, to maintain the flow of submissions
    • Required checklist tasks (e.g. wordcount, anonymised manuscripts, etc.)
    • Liaising with authors submitting manuscripts to facilitate peer review
    • Liaising with referees conducting peer review on manuscripts
    • Referring referee reports and recommendations to the Editor of the Journal for oversight
    • Working to agreed timescales for the aforementioned manuscript processing and checklist tasks

Role 2:

  • Via ScholarOne, editing manuscripts after acceptance to ensure:
    • Processing manuscripts entirely through the system after peer review has been conducted by the Editor, to maintain the flow of submissions
    • Required checklist tasks (e.g. wordcount, anonymised manuscripts, etc.)
    • Consistency of referencing
    • Accuracy and appropriate presentation of tables, figures, equations, data, and supplemental material
    • Compliance with the style and format of the Journal.
