Proposals for Editing EPAT Special Issues

Edit a theme issue. We welcome proposals for theme issues in Educational Philosophy and Theory (EPAT). Editing a Special Issue is an opportunity to influence the field by proposing a novel theme that engages deeply with current thinking and promoting an emerging area of research. Such an issue should facilitate wide-ranging discussion and encourage innovative thinking and publishing including speculative and policy-related work, review and research papers. This is an opportunity to gain useful editing experience with full support from the  EPAT Editorial team and to help build an international network with top scholars in the field.

EPAT publishes 14 per year and 3-4 special issues per year.

How to submit a proposal

  1. Submit a concept one-page paper to the Editor-in-Chief ([email protected]) detailing the chosen theme with 300 word abstract, a list of 6-7 potential contributors and five key readings from the literature.
  2. Space requirements for the Special Issue: A Special Issue budget allows 108 pages for the articles and the introduction. As one page of the journal is about 500 words a total of 54,000 words is available in each issue. The recommended article length for EPAT submissions is approximately 6000 words hence a plan for 8 submissions plus an introduction is ideal. Unless otherwise arranged with the EIC anything over the 108 pages must be paid for by the special issue editor so it is important that editors keep control of the total word count of submissions.   3. Develop a timetable with deadlines in consultation with the Managing Editor
  4. Internal Review Process: develop an internal review process where each paper is evaluated by two members/contributors of the special issue team.
  5. Submission to the journal website and peer review process:
    • Once a special issue editor has agreed to an author submitting an article to the special issue the author submits to the ScholarOne website http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/epat
      All articles need to be submitted as a blinded word document (not a pdf file) of about 6000 words
      along with :
      1. An abstract of no more than 250 words
      2. A list of key words relevant to content of article
      3. References in the ASP style as laid out in guidelines to authors on the EPAT website
      4. A file with a short bio note for all authors
      5. Acknowledgement of any copyright and conflict of interests
      6. Authors should mark their submission as for a Special Issue in the manuscript type drop down menu.
    • The special issue editor will then be assigned to these papers to control a review process. At least two blind reviewers will be assigned to each paper and can be chosen from EPAT’s large database of reviewers or be nominated by the Special Issue editor(s). This process is done online and help from the managing editor, Susanne Brighouse, [email protected] is available at any stage. The authors then have a chance to respond to reviewers’ comments and make any revisions necessary until the reviewers and editor are satisfied the paper is ready for publication.
      In some cases, the Executive Editor, Michael Peters, may suggest that two associate editors of the journal be assigned to review all papers in the issue.
      The Executive Editor, Michael Peters, has the final say on the issue before it is sent to publisher.


Educational Philosophy and Theory (EPAT) is one of the top SSCI journals in the field of philosophy of education with an Impact Factor of 1.415 (IF, 2019).

Eductional Philosophy and Theory publishes articles concerned with all aspects of educational philosophy. It will also consider manuscripts from other areas of pure or applied educational research. In this latter category the journal has published manuscripts concerned with curriculum theory, educational administration, the politics of education, educational history, educational policy, and higher education.

As part of the journal's commitment to extending the dialogues of educational philosophy to the profession and education's several disciplines, it encourages the submission of manuscripts from collateral areas of study in education, the arts, and sciences, as well as from professional educators.

It is the official journal of PESA – The Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia.

PESA is a learned society, established in 1970, incorporated in W Australia in 2005. It promotes the ideas, research and teaching in the Philosophy of Education. PESA publishes the world renowned SSCI ranked journal Educational Philosophy and Theory (EPAT) and ACCESS: Contemporary Issues in Education.

In 2020 we established a new website, PESA Agora, an open access meeting place for issues and concerns related to the philosophy of education, the wider fields of education, and culture in our contemporary world. We hold an annual international conference. Our membership is open to all those with an involvement in the Philosophy of Education.
