About the Role

Childhood Education International (CE International) seeks two Associate Co-Editors for the Journal of Research in Childhood Education (JRCE). Now in its 36th year of publication, JRCE is owned by CE International and published quarterly by Routledge. This journal has a global focus; therefore, Associate Editors should have international interests and experience, and be able to work effectively with international researchers and authors.

CE International seeks highly respected education researchers for this position, which will be a volunteer, professional appointment within the field. Co-Associate Editors would serve a three-year term, with the understanding that they would then take over the Co-Editor position (for a job description of the Editor position, contact the Director of Publications at [email protected]). Particular emphasis should be on presenting research on innovations in education through empirical research, theoretical articles, ethnographic and case studies, participant observation studies, and studies deriving data collected from naturalistic settings.

    Key Skills and Attributes

    Here are the skills and attributes we would be looking for in a successful applicant:

    • Have a recognized standing in the field of education research;

    • Be knowledgeable about and experienced in early, middle, and later childhood education and education research, with a particular interest in education innovations;

    • Have a significant interest in various types of innovations occurring in the field of education;

    • Be competent in both education writing and editing;

    • Have experience writing, reviewing, and editing research articles;

    • Have experience with supporting a program through social media and/or blog writing;

    • Have the ability to work cooperatively with the JRCE Co-Editors, CE International Headquarters Staff, and Routledge representatives;

    • Be committed to ethical professional and editorial standards;

    • Have an interest in expanding JRCE’s international content and reach with contacts in the global research community;

    • A doctorate is preferred.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      Under the guidance of the JRCE Co-Editors and the general supervision of the CE International Chief Executive Officer and Director of Publications, the Associate Editors will:

      • Assist with coordinating the online manuscript review process through ScholarOne;

      • Make recommendations for adding and removing reviewers;

      • Critique the reviewers’ comments and make decisions regarding publication of articles;

      • Attend JRCE Review Committee meetings, and work closely with the Co-Editors;

      • Coordinate the online manuscript submission and review process through ScholarOne;

      • Resolve disputes regarding final decisions on publication of articles;

      • Evaluate reviewers, and make recommendations for adding and removing reviewers;

      • Preside over JRCE Review Committee meetings;

      • Work with guest editors and contributing editors on special issues and features.

        Tenure: The Co-Associate Editors will be named by November 1, 2022, and will serve in that capacity for a three-year term (through 2025). Beginning in late 2025, the Co-Associate Editors will assume the role of Co-Editors for another three-year term.

        • A letter of application that explains the reasons the applicant wishes to undertake this responsibility, including a statement of the relationship between the applicant’s credentials and the qualifications stated for the position;

        • A letter from the applicant’s employer outlining provisions that can be made to permit time for the successful completion of duties of the Editor;

        • A current vita;

        • A statement of philosophy regarding the focus of the Journal of Research in Childhood Education;

        • Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to the applicant’s capabilities for this position;

        • Samples of the applicant’s published works, including any educational blogs.
