The Role of Big Earth Data in Public Health
Dear Colleagues,
COVID-19 has quickly become a pandemic that has affected the whole world. Not only is it restricting activities in our normal life, it is also leading us to think about how we can respond collectively to this global crisis.
For a long time, research on public health has recognized that big Earth data technologies, such as remote sensing, GIS and GPS, together with citizen-science technologies, have the ability to support epidemic monitoring, response and recovery. Public health can make use of big Earth data that has been acquired from diverse sources, ranging from satellite imagery to mobile telematics and volunteered geographical information.
Big Earth Data is an interdisciplinary open access academic journal that is jointly published by the International Society for Digital Earth, the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Taylor & Francis. Big Earth Data is the world’s first big data journal in the Earth sciences, and aims to provide an efficient and high-quality platform for promoting ‘big data’ sharing, processing and analysis, thereby revolutionizing the cognition of the Earth’s systems. The journal publishes original research articles, review articles, data papers and technical notes on ‘big data’ studies across the entire spectrum of Earth sciences.
We are now calling for paper submissions that address the opportunities for and challenges related to the use of big Earth data implementation in public health research and practice. Contributions that explore the links between COVID-19 and environmental and public health, as well as the multiple impacts that changes in human behavior have had on the Earth, are particularly encouraged. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to contribute manuscripts or organize a special issue on a related aspect to this research topic.
We trust that our community will give a positive response to this urgent call in order to help the whole of society.

More about the journal
Big Earth Data publishes gold open access research in the earth sciences, including earth system science, earth observation, earth systems monitoring, and environmental processes.
Big Earth Data is published on behalf of The International Society of Digital Earth.
Big Earth Data aims to provide an efficient and high-quality platform for promoting ‘big data’ sharing, processing and analyses, thereby revolutionising the cognition of the Earth’s systems. The journal primarily features the fundamentals of ‘big Earth data’ handling, as well as the channels and technologies used for ‘big Earth data’ collection, management, analysis and visualisation. To showcase the benefits of data-driven research, submissions on the applications of ‘big Earth data’ in exploring the Earth’s history and its future evolution are highly encouraged.
The journal accepts research on ‘big data’ studies relating to but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Earth observation
- Geography
- Geology
- Atmospheric science
- Marine science
- Geophysics
- Geochemistry
Big Earth Data publishes original research articles, review articles, data articles, technical notes and software papers.
Original research articles contain significant, insightful and original scientific work that has not been published previously.
Review articles should be timely and add clarity/discussion to the existing literature on the particular topic, rather than simply paraphrasing the existing articles, and should be of general interest to the journal’s broad readership.
Data articles focus on a large-scale dataset, and provide detailed methodology on data production, validation and potential reuse. All of the data described in a data article must be made publicly available and should be deposited with a recognized data repository. A template for preparing your data article is available here.
Technical notes present a software tool or a computational method for the analysis or handling of big Earth data. The tool or method described should be a new or updated version of an existing one.Big Earth Data supports an open data policy and serves as a direct link between the published manuscript and its relevant supporting data in the advancement of data sharing and reuse.
The journal operates a single-blind peer review process.
All articles will be made freely and permanently available online through gold open access publication.
Read the Instructions for Authors for information on how to submit your article.
