Stewardship and Analysis of Big Earth Observation Data

Big Earth Data Special Issue Call for Papers

Deadline: 31 December 2019

As we have entered the era of "Big Earth Observation (EO) Data", the volume of archived data assets in remote sensing data centers is continuing to increase. For example, the volume of data archived at the China National Satellite Meteorological Center reached more than 20 PBs in July 2019. Therefore, how to manage and oversee these data assets to help provide users with high-quality EO data that is easily accessible in a consistent manner has becoming an important issue. In addition, the volume, variety, and velocity of EO data have increased, which poses great challenges for the efficient processing and analysis of big EO data. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop effective data stewardship tools and advanced analytical techniques to ensure the best use of big EO data. This special issue will focus on the stewardship and analysis of big EO data collected from satellite and airborne sensors.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to) the following: (optional, but recommended)

  • Remote sensing data integration and aggregation
  • Long-term remote sensing data preservation
  • Quick discovery of and access to the vast and diverse collection of big EO data
  • Remote sensing data and information representation, ontologies, and inference
  • Security and privacy issues related to remotely sensed big data
  • Data inter-operability for multiple sensing platforms
  • Scalable and interactive data visualization
  • Scalable machine learning and data mining
  • Analytics under security, privacy, and real-time constraints
  • High-performance computing algorithms
