Quality Assurance in Metal Additive Manufacturing: Modeling, Monitoring, Metallurgy, Machine Learning, and Process Control

This special article collection concerns quality assurance in metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes, such as powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, metal jetting, among others. Despite their demonstrated ability in overcoming existing design, manufacturing, and supply chain barriers, the use of AM parts in safety critical applications remains constrained. Quality, repeatability, and throughput-related concerns are identified as the key bottlenecks in wider adoption of metal AM technologies. The root of these concerns is traced to the tendency of these processes to create part flaws, despite considerable process optimization. Research toward prevention, monitoring, and inspection of part flaws are therefore consequential toward the economic viability of the metal AM. Within the context of quality assurance in metal AM, the article collection invites papers in the following broad areas:

  • Physics-based modelling approaches to identify and prevent potential red-flag problems before a part is printed
  • Sensors arrays and systems for enhanced process monitoring
  • Physics, data-driven, data and physics integrated approaches for process prognosis, prediction of flaws and part properties
  • Rapid post-process inspection techniques
  • Process control (feedforward or feedback control) to maintain functional integrity of the part
  • Experimental studies that elucidate phenomenological pathways of flaw formation
  • In-process or post-process techniques to eliminate flaws, enhance functionality
  • Novel design, work flow tools, and process innovations to mitigate flaw formation
