New Directions in Structurally Engineered Materials

Structurally engineered materials are artificially designed to achieve unique and customizable responses in a certain physical environment, surpassing the conventional materials composed of atomic-scale unit cells. These structurally engineered materials are driven by a design-centered approach, allowing for precise control over the desired properties and transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries and fostering boundless creativity. Initially, the focus was on unconventional electromagnetic properties, but the field has since expanded to encompass various disciplines, such as mechanical, acoustic, thermal, and so forth.

This collection showcases the latest advancements in the design, fabrication, and characterization of structurally engineered materials, covering mechanical, acoustic, thermal, magnetic, and other applications. Researchers and experts have been pushing the boundaries of what is possible by manipulating internal structures and unlocking new and exciting capabilities in materials science.

In this Article Collection, we delve into the design approaches, underlying mechanisms, and exceptional properties of structurally engineered materials, including but not limited to the following subtopics:

  1. Novel Design Paradigm, Mechanisms, and Superior Properties
  2. Tunable, Adaptive, and Reconfigurable Metamaterials
  3. AI Approaches to Materials Discovery
  4. Advanced Manufacturing Technologies
  5. Topological and Unconventional Dynamics
  6. Multiscale Modelling and Simulation Approaches
  7. Control and Characterization

We believe that this Article Collection will serve as an invaluable resource for researchers, engineers, and scientists, fostering a deeper comprehension of structurally engineered materials.
