Maximizing semiconductor materials during times of shortage

Semiconductors are crucial to various everyday items, including smartphones, medical devices and household appliances. As a result of their usage in everyday items, semiconductors keep society functioning. However, following world events and a changing demand for products and materials, optimizing the manufacturing of products requiring semiconductors is important for future use.

Therefore, special consideration must be given to the possible solutions for the material shortage. This can include investigating novel materials that may be used in future technologies, alterations in the purification processes preceding manufacturing and through to their integration into a device.

The knowledge base could advise those working with sensors on how to best use the materials available for semiconductor manufacturing. Although, it is of equal importance to look ahead and recognise potential future challenges. How can we mitigate these hurdles? What can we do now to ensure that industry is prepared for these scenarios? Our Article Collection aims to look at present solutions, but to also future proof semiconductor manufacturing.

This Article Collection will solicit articles related to the following subjects. However, we welcome all submissions related to the umbrella topic of the semiconductor supply chain and materials used:

  • Challenges in making improvements to semiconductors and possible solutions
  • Optimizing manufacturing and functions of semiconductors to counteract shortages and lost potential
  • Changes in purification and manufacturing processes
  • Impact of increased sustainability on semiconductor manufacturing
  • Long-term impacts of COVID-19 on supply and construction capacity
  • Future threats to semiconductor material supplies
