Hypogonadism in the Aging Male

The Aging Male is pleased to invite you to submit your research to the upcoming Article Collection “Hypogonadism in the Aging Male” organized by Guest Advisor Professor Dr. Bac Hoai Nguyen.

The world has been facing the inevitable trend of depopulation regarding the unprecedented decrease in the fertility rate. People are now living longer but are at risk of increasing non-communicable diseases that put aging societies’ welfare systems under enormous pressure. Elderly men are a vulnerable population, notably in countries with the tradition of son preference leading to an imbalanced sex ratio and an excess of men. Testosterone plays an irreplaceable role in overall health, thus, maintaining the physiological level of this hormone may be a promising strategy to cope with this foreseeable future.

The incidence of late-onset hypogonadism in men increases with aging. The mechanism for this phenomenon is still not known. However, testosterone deficiency has been linked to the physical and mental capacity and well-being of men. Even though testosterone therapy for hypogonadism has been proven to improve men’s sexual function, metabolism, cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and mobility in old age, there are concerns and controversies related to the costs and benefits of this treatment. Moreover, the question about the effects of adequately supplementing testosterone in eugonadal elderly men is not understood, but if so, this hormonal therapy may become the cost-effective solution for healthful longevity and for reducing financial pressure on the welfare system of many developing countries with rapid population aging.

To fill the gaps in knowledge and establish transparent connections, we kindly invite you to share your expertise on the health consequences of late-onset hypogonadism and the role of testosterone therapy or supportive treatments in elderly men’s life.

This Article Collection welcomes all relevant original research articles, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses related but not limited to:
