Sustainable Energy Development in Developing Countries: Strategies, Challenges and Opportunities

This Article Collection focusses on unravelling the processes, strategies, dynamics, and patterns of development of energy systems in developing countries. It also seeks to explore the challenges and opportunities in energy systems development within different geographical contexts in the global south and the steps being taken by many developing countries to transit towards a more sustainable energy future.

Since energy drives global development and economic processes, it is important to understand the drivers of energy systems change and how various developing countries have patterned their energy systems development, for example:

  • What are the key drivers of change in energy systems?
  • What does energy access mean within a developing country context?
  • How does different contextual norms shape energy demand and use patterns?
  • In what ways have energy policy and infrastructure systems interventions shaped the energy transition narrative in developing countries?
  • What lessons can we learn from historical energy systems interventions in developing countries and how can we incorporate the lessons learnt in shaping future energy?

Answering these salient questions can provide some insights on how various developing countries are contributing to addressing the SDG7 goal of clean and affordable energy.

This Collection welcomes article submissions (including research and review articles) that focuses on (but not limited to) the following topics within developing country contexts:

  • Energy access issues
  • Energy poverty dynamics
  • Renewable energy in developing countries
  • Energy policy dynamics in developing countries
  • Grid and off-grid electricity systems
  • Solar energy and mini grids
  • Patterns of energy systems interventions in developing countries
  • Energy democracy and energy justice in developing countries
  • Energy infrastructure financing
  • Productive use of energy
  • Infrastructure for energy access
