The Social Influence of Phubbing
We are pleased to announce a call for participation in an article collection on the topic of phubbing, to be published in Social Influence. This unique collection aims to delve into the multifaceted phenomenon of phubbing and explore its implications for individuals, relationships, and society at large.
Phubbing, a portmanteau of "phone" and "snubbing," refers to the act of ignoring or neglecting others in favour of one's mobile phone. In an increasingly digitalized world, phubbing has become a pervasive behaviour with the potential to disrupt interpersonal connections, reshape social dynamics, and influence communication patterns through the powerful forces of social influence.
Social Influence invites scholars from diverse disciplines to contribute their insights and expertise, shedding light on the multifaceted aspects of phubbing from a social influence perspective. We encourage submissions that utilize robust methodologies and theoretical frameworks to examine the psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of this phenomenon.
Potential areas of exploration for this Article Collection include, but are not limited to:
- Investigating the role of phubbing as a form of digital ostracism and its impact on individuals' feelings of social exclusion, belonging, and social connectedness.
- Exploring the psychological and emotional implications of being phubbed compared to other forms of digital ostracism, considering factors such as perceived intentionality, relational closeness, and social feedback.
- Investigating the mechanisms underlying phubbing behaviour and its effects
- Deepening our knowledge of individual differences that predict phubbing behaviour
- Exploring motives behind phubbing and different perceptions of its effects from the phubbers’ perspective.
- Analysing the influence of social norms and group dynamics in phubbing behaviour and its social perception.
- Analysing the role of offline and online communities in shaping attitudes and behaviours related to phubbing.
- Unravelling the social and cultural factors that contribute to the adoption and perpetuation of phubbing behaviour.
- Assessing the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing or mitigating phubbing behaviour, considering the role of social influence strategies, persuasive messaging, and social norms interventions, and including promoting digital etiquette and mindful technology use.
By curating a collection of high-quality research articles, this Article Collection aims to deepen our understanding of phubbing through the lens of social influence. We welcome original research papers, including literature reviews, theoretical discussions, and empirical studies, illuminating the complex interplay between phubbing behaviour and social influence.
Authors are encouraged to submit their manuscripts in accordance with the guidelines provided by Social Influence. We invite scholars and experts to contribute to this article collection, providing valuable insights into the profound influence of social dynamics on phubbing. This collection will contribute to the existing literature, stimulate critical discussions, and pave the way for future research and interventions addressing the challenges posed by phubbing.
