Skin Allergy and Hypersensitivity - Clinical Updates, Challenges and Perspectives
Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigative Dermatology is pleased to announce a new Article Collection explores research on skin allergy and hypersensitivity disorders.
Allergy and hypersensitivity disorders of the skin are frequent reasons for seeking medical consultations not only from dermatologists, but also from allergists and general practitioners. In many cases, these conditions cause considerable practical problems and may pose real challenges during the diagnostic and therapeutic process. The last few years have witnessed significant progress and development of available therapeutic options, which may in part help overcome these obstacles and facilitate the therapeutic management of patients with dermatological allergy and hypersensitivity. Particularly, novel and emerging treatment modalities such as monoclonal antibodies and small molecules contribute to the alleviation of symptoms and improvement of the quality of life of the affected patients.
Over the last few years, allergies have been on the rise both in the pediatric and adult populations. Skin is a frequent target organ, very often the first site where allergy symptoms appear. Despite the increasing number of treatment options, multiple issues remain insufficiently addressed and unresolved. These include the choice of the right biologic for a given phenotype of atopic dermatitis; recommendations for routine testing for metal hypersensitivity before orthopedic implant surgery; and efficacy of different treatment regimens (including biologics) in inducible urticarias. In addition, comorbidities of atopic dermatitis, such as food and airborne allergies, as well as systemic inflammatory diseases beyond the scope of dermatology and allergy specialties, are gaining wider recognition among clinicians and researchers. In this context, real-world data on the efficacy of modern treatment modalities are of notable value, given the growing body of evidence. Finally, patients presenting with various forms of angioedema (hereditary and acquired) are consulted most frequently by allergists and dermatologists. However, angioedema is a purely interdisciplinary problem, given its complex etiology and symptomatology, and the development of novel, efficient treatment and prophylactic modalities for hereditary forms of angioedema warrants the rapid identification of eligible patients to avoid treatment initiation delays.
This Article Collection aims to attract contributions approaching the above-mentioned issues. The key topics include, but are not limited to:
- Skin manifestations of food, drug, and airborne allergy
- All aspects of atopic dermatitis – from pathogenesis, through epidemiology, to management, both in pediatric and adult populations
- Current trends in the management of chronic spontaneous urticaria
- Chronic inducible urticaria
- Contact dermatitis – allergic and irritant – in the context of exposure to occupational factors and medical procedures
- Hereditary and acquired angioedema
This article collection welcomes the following types of submissions: original basic and clinical research articles; systematic reviews and meta-analyses; scoping and narrative reviews; and case-reports and case-series accompanied with a literature review.
Keywords:
allergy; hypersensitivity; atopic and contact dermatitis; urticaria; hereditary and acquired angioedema
