Peptidomimetics as Potential Therapeutic Agents
Peptidomimetics are synthetically engineered molecules designed to mimic the structure and function of conventional peptides, with the aim of overcoming drawbacks associated with conventional peptides such as poor stability, bioavailability, selectivity, and activity. Peptidomimetics achieve enhanced aforementioned properties through a wide range of chemical modifications, including macrocyclization, side chain alterations, unnatural molecular scaffold or new molecular framework. This collection aims to highlight peptidomimetics as potential therapeutic agents to combat diseases including but not limited to cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and infectious diseases.
Regular peptides are important modalities for therapeutic development, yet their susceptibility to proteolytic degradation, poor stability and bioavailability, hampering their wide application. Peptidomimetics could overcome the limitations of regular peptides by introducing synthetic scaffolds and enhancing chemical functional diversity. Some peptidomimetics are already approved by FDA, highlighting their importance and promising future.
The scope this collection is broad. Any topics related to potential therapeutic potential of peptidomimetics will be considered, including peptidomimetics targeting cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, infectious diseases, and others. The article types can be research article or review.
