Oral Microbiome and heart disease
The oral microbiome plays a crucial role in systemic health, with growing evidence linking its dysbiosis to cardiovascular diseases. Periodontal pathogens have been associated with endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and an increased risk of myocardial infarction. Periodontal infections and microbial imbalances contribute to systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of heart disease.
Understanding the relationship between the oral microbiome and heart disease is essential for advancing preventive strategies and improving diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in cardiovascular health. Identifying key microbial signatures and their metabolic pathways can aid in the development of early diagnostic tools and targeted interventions. This knowledge can bridge the gap between dentistry and cardiology, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration to improve patient outcomes. By recognizing oral health as a critical factor in cardiovascular disease prevention, healthcare professionals can implement more comprehensive approaches, integrating oral hygiene and microbiome modulation into routine cardiovascular care. Expanding research in this field has the potential to reduce global cardiovascular disease burden through non-invasive, cost-effective strategies, ultimate enhancing overall public health.
This Article Collection explores the intricate relationship between the oral microbiome and heart disease, emphasizing its role in systemic inflammation, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular risk.
The collection aligns with the Journal of Oral Microbiology’s scope, seeking articles on following topics related but not limited to:
- Examine key oral microbial agents,
- host-pathogen interactions,
- the molecular mechanisms underlying oral infections that contribute to cardiovascular conditions,
- cardiovascular inflammatory biomarkers
- potential interventions targeting the oral microbiome to mitigate cardiovascular risks.
By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, this collection aims to enhance our understanding of the oral-systemic axis and advance knowledge on preventive and therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases. Preferred article types include Original Research, Review Articles, Systematic Reviews, and Brief Reports.
