Nutrition and Healthy Aging: Significance of Nutritional Status, Relevant Nutrients, and Dietary Patterns in Geroscience
By 2030, approximately 20% of the US population will be 65 years or older. Life expectancy has increased with advances in public health and technology. A substantial portion of these individuals will eventually present with chronic disease or frailty and become more susceptible due to deteriorating health, increased risk of falls, and other health complications which will place a tremendous burden on the current healthcare system. This scenario emphasizes the urgency for translational research that explores, develops, and implements nutritional strategies to prevent, slow the progression, or manage chronic diseases as well as mitigate various debilitating conditions and enhance resiliency in support of healthy aging and quality of life.
This Article Collection targets the impact of nutritional status, role of relevant nutrients, and considerations for various dietary patterns on successful aging, promoting longevity, and the prevention and management of age-related diseases to advance the field of geroscience. We are seeking submissions that identify and disseminate investigations that have implicated a role for nutrients, various components of foods, and dietary patterns in the pursuit of healthy aging and quality of life. Additionally, authors are encouraged to submit articles based on the premise of developing feasible nutrition-based interventions to moderate the effects of aging and possibly diminish age-related diseases.
Nancy Rodriguez, PhD, RDN, is a Professor Emerita of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Connecticut. Her research targets relationships between energy balance, protein intake, and protein utilization in healthy, active populations across the lifespan with recent endeavors focusing on associations between protein quantity, protein quality, and muscle health with specific regard for healthy aging and rehabilitative nutrition. She is a past Vice-President (2024-2025) of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Submission Instructions
This call for submissions is broad and encompasses a spectrum of topics including nutritional needs, nutritional status and malnutrition, the impact of recommended dietary patterns, considerations for whole vs processed foods, bioactive compounds, hydration needs, nutritional assessment methodology (e.g., biomarkers), nutritional interventions (e.g., creatine supplementation and cognition), and the gut microbiome. Extension of these respective topics to the musculoskeletal system, chronic disease management (i.e., cardiometabolic diseases, medications/medical interventions such as GLP-1), crosstalk specific to lifestyle (i.e., sleep, physical activity or exercise), and in the context of mental health is encouraged.
This Article Collection invites pioneering research and comprehensive reviews focused on the impact and significance of nutritional status, relevant nutrients (e.g., vitamin D), foods and their respective components, and dietary patterns to advance healthy aging and prevent age-related diseases. High-quality systematic reviews, meta-analyses, narrative reviews, and critical perspectives that interpret and extend existing knowledge, identify research gaps, and propose novel research directives are requested.
All manuscripts submitted to this Article Collection will undergo desk assessment and peer-review as part of our standard editorial process.
Please review the journal scope and author submission instructions prior to submitting a manuscript.
