Nipah Virus in Focus
Nipah virus (NiV), a zoonotic disease, first emerged in Malaysia in 1998. Since then, cases of Nipah virus infection have been reported in Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. As the epidemiology of Nipah virus unfolds, recurring outbreaks highlight the unpredictable nature of emerging infectious disease.
The case fatality rate of Nipah virus outbreaks has ranged from 40% to 75%, and with no licensed medicines or vaccines specific for infection, Nipah virus is considered a priority pathogen for the acceleration of medical countermeasures as part of the WHO R&D Blueprint for Epidemics. There is an urgent need to develop vaccines and therapies against Nipah virus, while continued surveillance and control measures are required to reduce the impact on public health.
To help address these unmet needs, and aid in the discoverability of new findings, Emerging Microbes & Infections has launched an Article Collection addressing the full spectrum of Nipah virus research, from fundamental biology to implementation science. Potential topics of this Article Collection include but are not limited to:
- Epidemiology and surveillance
- Pathogenesis
- Transmission and risk factors
- Clinical management and diagnostics
- Vaccines and therapeutics
- Public health and implementation science
