Natural products and renal disease

Kidney disease has emerged as a major public health problem, characterized by increased morbidity and mortality. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), beyond traditional risk factors. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers have been identified as first-line therapies that are effective in slowing the progression of hypertension, CVD, and CKD. However, despite the efficacy of this approach, many CKD patients treated with these drugs still progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and require renal replacement therapies, such as dialysis and transplantation.

Natural products have long been used in clinical settings and is considered an alternative therapy for treating various diseases, including the prevention and treatment of CKD. The therapeutic effects of TCM on kidney disease, and their antifibrotic molecular mechanisms, have been shown to be associated with the renin-angiotensin system, oxidative stress, and inflammation, as well as the TGF-β/Smad and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways.

This Article Collection aims to highlight the current progress in natural products targeting renal disease. We invite submissions that address the following themes but are not limited to:

  • Basic research and clinical trials to evaluate the effect of natural products or natural products in improving kidney disease by using cellular and molecular biology, pharmacology, and pathology.
  • Systems biology-based on the illumination of the pathogenesis of kidney diseases and the intervention effects of natural products or natural products on kidney diseases.
  • Gut microbiota mediated the pathogenesis of kidney diseases and the intervention effects of natural products or natural products on dysbiosis of gut microbiota in kidney diseases.
  • Evidence-based clinical research on the efficacy and safety of natural products on kidney diseases.
  • Methodological research such as meta-analysis, protocol of clinical trials on effects of natural products in kidney diseases.

We welcome the following types of articles: original papers, reviews, perspectives, notes, and short communications.
