Aspects and Challenges of Multimorbidity in Scandinavian Primary Health Care

Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care is pleased to invite you to submit your research to the upcoming Article Collection "Aspects and Challenges of Multimorbidity in Scandinavian Primary Health Care."

Multimorbidity can be defined as the co-existence of two or more chronic or long-term conditions in an individual. Multimorbidity, which increases with a longer lifespan, is very common in primary care settings and poses challenges for both healthcare providers and patients. In Scandinavian countries, many chronic disorders, such cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and psychiatric disorders are handled almost entirely within primary health care.

Key issues with multimorbidity encompass the coordination and prioritization of care for multiple conditions, coupled with the inadequacy of disease-specific guidelines. Recommended therapy and measures of treatment goals may not always be adequate for multimorbid patients since interactions and polypharmacy ought to be avoided and since different goals may be in conflict. For primary health care providers, it can be a challenge to help the patient handle many diseases in a holistic way. For patients that are often at old age, it can be a challenge to learn about several diseases, and to handle different treatments and medications correctly. Even though some research on these aspects and challenges have been performed, there are still many gaps in our knowledge, and more research in the area is needed to help improve management of multimorbidity for both primary health care providers and patients.

In this regard, the Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care would like to invite authors to submit Research Articles, Systematic Reviews, Qualitative Papers, and other manuscript types accepted by the journal on any subject area tailored towards chronic conditions and multimorbidity in Scandinavian primary health care that could add to the current knowledge. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Risk factors, clinical factors and diagnostic measures to improve the management of multimorbidity and the prognosis for multimorbid patients;
  • Approaches to pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of multimorbidity;
  • Epidemiological and clinical studies on the prevalence and incidence of multimorbidity in Scandinavian patients;
  • Health policies and legislations to improve primary health care for patients with multimorbidity.

Keywords: Chronic Conditions and Multimorbidity, Scandinavian Primary Health Care, Prevalence, Health policies and legislation, Epidemiology
